3DTV and Gaming - Overview

22nd May 2011 - 3D technology has come a long way since the days of headache inducing red and blue glasses. Recently consumers have been given the opportunity to bring cutting edge 3D televisions into their own living rooms.

Whilst television and movies undoubtedly look stunning in 3D, video gaming looks set to make full use of the benefits that 3D technology can provide. As a gamer you may not need to be convinced to buy 3D TV, as console manufacturers make 3D look more attractive than ever.

Both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are capable of producing 3D visuals, as long as you have a 3D ready television connected to your console through a HDMI cable, all you need is a 3D compatible game.

Once set up, gamers can take advantage of the numerous benefits of 3D gaming on their TV. The effect of playing a game in 3D is astonishing. The increased depth and detail makes you feel more immersed in the world you’re interacting with.

Huge titles such as Gran Turismo 5, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Killzone 3 are already available to play in 3D and as the technology becomes more widely adopted it is thought that eventually all new games will be compatible.

Many are speculating that video gaming could be the driving force behind many consumers choosing to upgrade to a 3DTV. This is not only good news for gamers but good news for those waiting for more 3D television content as if more people own a 3D compatible TV; the demand will increase for content so it should arrive quicker.

Sony is currently leading the way with the synergy between the PS3 and 3DTV’s. Consumers can download a wealth of 3D content through the Playstation Network including movies, music videos and game demos.

With many people undecided about whether 3DTV truly has the capability to be anything more than a gimmick, it appears video games may turn out to be the saviour of this fledgling technology.
