AAG Feature: Is Gran Turismo 5 the 2010 GOTY Already?

21st October 2009 - Gran Turismo 5 has been in production for over 4 years now. It is one of the most anticipated titles that will ever be released for the Playstation 3. A lot of PS3 owners bought their PS3's in anticipation for this game. Not many people would have thought that the wait for the game would be this long, but at least at the 2009 Tokyo Game Show (TGS) it was finally revealed that GT5 will be released in March 2010 (in Japan at least). With this announcement came confirmation that all the rumors surrounding a probable 2009 release were false and the hopes of all GT fans of it releasing this holiday season dashed.

Will the extra few months of production time help Polyphony Digital improve things even more? Only time will tell, but the question now is will anything else released in 2010 be able to touch GT5 when it comes time for the obligatory Game of the Year announcements at the end of 2010? You could well say probably not. Sure there will be other great games like Splinter Cell: Conviction, Alan Wake, M.A.G, God of War 3, Heavy Rain and Halo: Reach coming in 2010, but can they live up to what is arguably the biggest Sony franchise and a game that has been over 4 years in the making? I for one highly doubt it.

Gran Turismo 5 will most likely be the biggest selling game of 2010 and although the other games mentioned above will be of a very high quality, the sheer blood, sweat and tears that Polyphony Digital has put into making GT5 the best it can be will not be matched. The man hours Polyphony Digital has put into every little detail of GT5 is astounding.

Once GT5 releases there will obviously be many more comparisons done between it and Forza 3, but as GT5 is assured of releasing in 2010, not 2009, means that GT5 will stand out on its own as the definitive racer and game to own in 2010. Good luck to the rest of the developers!
